Abstract
The critics agree that the underlying theme of all the poetry of Robert Browning is the human soul, and that his study of humanity is the outstanding characteristic of his poetic efforts. The critics also agree that another great personal interest of Browning’s dictated the second characteristic of his poetry, his constant reference to five fine arts. The effect of Browning’s deep interest in personality upon his employment of artistic themes was to direct him toward those arts that most clearly and intensely disclose the artist as a man, namely music and painting. The intimate and first-hand information that gave Browning his deep insight into the personality of the musician and the painter resulted from natural talent and excellent training in those arts.
