Description
This research paper investigated the impact of urban heat islands on campus microclimates, using a temperature survey to analyze variations in urban composition relative to tree density across the campus. The study spans multiple sites across the St. Mary’s University campus, with the following three major groups: Shaded, Partial Shade, and No Shade. Each grouping had two sites in different locations across campus to provide areas that best suited the characteristics, as well as site variation for the study. A data collection schedule was made for the months of January and February to cover two sites within a different grouping per day across a 1- hour time frame. Data was collected using a THE-343 K/J Thermometer Dual Sensor Model TP-01 and recorded temperatures in five different spots within the site location. Each time the temperature was recorded for that site, the same 5 spots were used as the pinpoints for each collection day. The start and end temperatures for the days that the data was collected for were pulled from the San Antonio International Airport Station to use as a control comparison.
