Description

Reflection on past experiences is crucial to spiritual and emotional growth.  Often times students in college do not spend enough time reflecting deeply on their experiences and as a result they do not realize the profundity of an event or experience for their overall life or for a sense of belonging to the University community.  Lonergan provides us with a framework for how we come to insight to make a decision about our experiences.  The process includes naming the experience, understanding the experience, making a judgement about the experience and concludes with a decision about the experience.  While stages may be fluid and not necessarily linear, the process implies that insight is gained over time.  Because insight is gained over time, time must be granted for an individual to come to a deeper reflection, a deeper insight, about their experience.  This paper will explore how the use of scaffolding an end of the semester assignment utilizing Lonergan’s Method might provide the student with an opportunity for a deeper reflection upon their experience as a first-year student at St. Mary’s University.
